Find out if you are eligible for a targeted retention incentive payment for further education teachers

Use this service to check your eligibility for a targeted retention incentive payment before you apply.

Before starting the eligibility check, it may be useful to have the following information to hand:

  • your contract or written statement of employment
  • your teaching timetable

Answering questions about eligibility takes 10 minutes and applying for the payment takes another 5 minutes.

You will need a GOV.UK One Login account to apply for a targeted retention incentive payment. If you don’t have an account yet, we will help you create one. You will also need to have a form of photo ID to hand to prove your identity.

You must prove your identity using the GOV.UK One Login service in order to submit a claim for an incentive payment.

Eligibility criteria

Claimants should be in the first 5 years of their FE teaching career in England and teach specific FE courses in the following subject areas:

  • building and construction
  • chemistry
  • computing, including digital and ICT
  • early years
  • engineering and manufacturing, including transport engineering and electronics
  • maths
  • physics

Application process

You must apply between October 2024 and March 2025.

If you are eligible for a targeted retention incentive payment, we will collect some personal information to:

  • prove your identity - this will be done via GOV.UK One Login
  • verify your claim
  • process your payment

If you don’t have a GOV.UK One Login account yet, you will need to create one. To do this, you will need:

  • an email address
  • a way to get security codes - this can be a mobile phone number or an authenticator app

You can prove your identity using the GOV.UK One Login application, by answering questions online or by visiting a Post Office.

If you need to visit a Post Office to prove your identity, this process can take up to 10 working days. Your application details will not be saved and you will need to start your application again.

Payments and deductions

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you could be eligible for between £2,000 and £6,000. The amount you are eligible for depends on:

Payments are given up to 26 weeks from applying. You will receive an approval email with further information on your application.
