Find out if you are eligible for any additional payments

Additional payments are to encourage early career teachers in state-funded secondary schools in England to continue teaching. Eligible subjects are:

  • chemistry
  • computing
  • languages
  • mathematics
  • physics

Payment amount

Teachers of eligible subjects can receive between £2,000 and £7,500. The amount you are eligible for depends on:

  • the subject you teach
  • the school you teach in
  • when your initial teacher training (ITT) course started (postgraduate) or finished (undergraduate)

How to apply

The application checks your eligibility before you apply. Once you start the application you cannot save your progress.

Answering questions about eligibility takes 5 minutes and applying for the payment takes another 5 minutes.

Further information

You must apply between October 2024 and March 2025.

If you are eligible for an additional payment, we will collect personal information to verify your claim and process your payment.

Payments are given up to 26 weeks from applying. You will receive an approval email with further information on your application.

The different additional payments

There are 2 types of additional payment. You may be eligible for both payments, but you will only be able to apply for one each year.

Both schemes offer the largest payments to those teaching in more disadvantaged areas and schools.

Claim back your student loan repayments

If you have a student loan, you may be able to claim back student loan repayments (opens in new tab) made while employed as a teacher. This is separate and you can apply for this whether or not you receive an early-career payment or school targeted retention incentive.
